Zynga's ready to hit the social game gridiron, registers sports domains

Are you ready to take a trip to SportsVille? Thankfully, that's not one of the several sports-related domain names social game maker Zynga registered recently, according to Fusible. It looks like the CityVille maker wants to take the fight directly to one of EA's specialties: sports. Zynga has registered domain names like "ZyngaSports.com" and several iterations of "ZyngaFootball".

"I did a little domain sleuthing today," Fusible writes, "and found that the domain ZyngaSports.com was transferred this week to the intellectual property law firm, Keats McFarland & Wilson, who of course acts as Zynga's attorneys in IP matters such as that of the Blingville dispute."

Fusible suggests that a football Facebook game might be Zynga's first. But considering the football season is essentially over, that would be a questionable move on the FarmVille maker's part. At any rate, Zynga appears to be going right after EA's social sports franchise, especially if you look at recent Zynga hires like NBA Jam creator Mark Turmell, formerly of EA.

A Zynga Sports Facebook page also exists, but it's impossible to tell whether it's actually Zynga or just another user. The website points out that the launch of Zynga Sports is entirely speculation, but there are several signs pointing in that direction. However, we sure hope the social game leader has learned from its competition, as none of EA's "Superstars" games hold over 300,000 daily players.
