Once you're in a party with your friends (they can invite you, or you can invite them), you'll see their scores fill part of a meter, and it will be up to you to score more points to fill the meter, hopefully to the very top.
There are special milestones within this meter that will see you being rewarded increasingly large amounts of coins along the way, but you'll need to wait before everyone completes their turn before actually being rewarded your coins.
Not only does this encourage communication between players ("Hey, finish our game, will ya?"), but it also offers even more incentive to routinely come back to the game than ever before, as you'll, in theory, be excited to find if your coins (sometimes into the thousands of coins) have been awarded yet.
You'll receive access to a free party each day, and can then spend Tokens to start more Parties. You'll be given five Tokens for free the first time you use this feature, and can purchase more Tokens with Facebook Credits. It's important to note that parties will come with different score milestones to reach each time, and that you can use power-ups while competing within Parties, so the gameplay isn't really that different from simply climbing up the normal friends leaderboard as normal. Except here, you have the chance to walk away with thousands of coins for performing well, that you wouldn't have earned otherwise. That's a pretty good deal, wouldn't you say?
