The Wizard101 maker looks to somehow make pirates magical

Making them free-to-play (F2P) and fly around in magical airships could certainly do the trick. Plano, Texas-based developer KingsIsle Entertainment has revealed Pirate101, it's second massively multiplayer online game (MMO) set in the Wizard101 universe. The upcoming kids-focused MMO, which VentureBeat reports is currently in alpha testing, will allow players to battle friends in strategic, sky-bound airship bouts.

In Pirate101, players can choose to be a witch doctor, privateer, swashbuckler, musketeer or buccaneer and search for buried treasure with their friends. The ultimate goal for players is to find the lost city of El Dorado. KingsIsle hopes that Wizard101's 13 million monthly players will be interested in Pirate101 when it finally launches.

Since VentureBeat reports that this MMO has been in developer for over 2.5 years, we imagine that will be rather soon. And that lengthy development period should end up paying off: KingsIsle VP of marketing Fred Howard told VentureBeat that there will be 400 hours worth of content in Pirate101 at launch.

While the game will, in fact, be F2P, Pirate101 will offer in-game content and items for real money, using a paid currency known as Crowns. Players that subscribe to the MMO will likely receive all of that content up for sale as part of what they're paying every month. Either, pirates in flying ships sounds like something that's begging to be played. Learn more about the game right here.
