Apple, Google and even Amazon have met a new challenger in the free-to-play (F2P) games space: Sony. The company's new pride and joy, the PlayStation Vita portable gaming system, has just received its first-ever F2P game in Treasures of Montezuma Blitz. A match-three puzzlers by Moscow-based Alawar Entertainment, Treasures of Montezuma Blitz has players matching like-colored gems in timed sessions.Much like, well, every match-three game ever, players match three or more like gems to destroy them, leaving room for more gems to fall and even more combos for points. It also seems as if Treasures of Montezuma Blitz features a social component in weekly tournaments that include players' fellow PS Vita players. Of course, Alawar offers players an edge on the competition by allowing them to buy power-ups for real money rather than earning them in-game.
"Treasures of Montezuma Blitz is the one game that every Vita owner should own, not just because it's completely free, but because it's really fun," Alawar Entertainment VP of new platforms Dmitri Bourkovski said in a release. "The Power-ups are totally optional, but a very fun way to be competitive with your friends if you don't have as much time to earn them in game." And now we start the stopwatch on how long before Nintendo follows suit--we might need a bigger clock.
